A blast from the past – Let’s Talk Social 2023
The other day, a seemingly simple request threw me into a contemplative state. The task was to present examples of my writing and content creation. Initially, this was an effortless endeavour, considering the daily posts I share on Instagram. But then, reality struck. Those Instagram updates, though frequent, are primarily composed of images punctuated by a handful of hashtags. It led me to question a more profound matter: when was the last time I truly engaged in the art of extensive and substantive writing?
Within my professional landscape, my interactions typically involve receiving content from suppliers and dealerships. This content often necessitates tweaking, whether refurbishing existing material or dealing with technical aspects such as product specifications and ingredient lists. However, it’s rare that I’m tasked with crafting a multifaceted piece of writing. This realisation prompted a journey into the recesses of my memory—to identify the last instance when I truly dedicated myself to the composition of a few pages of thought-provoking text.
As I delved deeper into this inquiry, the answer emerged with a hint of nostalgia. The last time I genuinely committed to the act of writing was during my regular stints on the radio. The “Let’s Talk Social” segment became a platform where my ideas found resonance, even if it was just in the ears of a faceless audience. I recalled the radio scripts that used to form the backbone of those segments. To my surprise, I even managed to recover the studio recordings of those broadcasts, now relics from a bygone era.
In their raw and unpolished form, these scripts carried the essence of my thoughts and the spirit of the times. While many of the links they contained have since faded into oblivion, they have found a new home on the 23 Creative Website. This repository of insights serves not only as a personal time capsule but also as a testament to the evolving landscape of digital communication and expression.
In my venture down memory lane, a revelation dawned upon me. The topics I once tackled, spanning from the fervour of the Kelowna City Council Elections in late 2009 to the jubilation of becoming a Canadian citizen in June 2010, offered a vivid panorama of a rapidly shifting world. It’s fascinating to reflect on how the realm of social media has metamorphosed over the course of almost two and a half decades.
This introspection has galvanised me to embark on a new quest—to revisit the themes that once fueled my radio scripts and analyse the changes that have unfurled over the past twenty-three years. I extend an open invitation to you, the reader, to accompany me on this journey.
Whether you choose to listen to the original “Let’s Talk Social” broadcasts or read through the written transcripts, your perspective is invaluable to me. Your observations and insights will play a pivotal role in the upcoming phase of my odyssey—a chapter I’m now christening, “Let’s Talk Business Marketing.”
In this contemporary landscape, social media has evolved far beyond being a mere enigma that necessitates deciphering. It has seamlessly woven into the fabric of business marketing, emerging as an indispensable facet of digital marketing strategies. As businesses strive to map out their growth trajectories, integrating social media into their framework is no longer a discretionary choice; it has continued growing exponentially into an essential strategic imperative.
In conclusion, the task of reflecting on my writing journey has unveiled layers of introspection. From the realm of Instagram posts to the airwaves of radio, my exploration of writing’s various dimensions has revealed a shift in the role of social media—a change that I’m eager to explore alongside perhaps my old social friends and acquaintances and to create a new audience in the chapters that follow.
